Implement NEP 2020 with LearnQoch
NEP- Since independence India has seen 4 education policies in 1968, 1986, 1992 and 2020. Each one of them is being designed to address specific set of problems. Following were the broad objective of each policy
- 1968 policy focused to fulfil compulsory education for all children up to the age of 14.
- 1986 policy focused to remove disparities and to equalise educational opportunity, especially for Indian women, Scheduled Tribes (ST) and the Scheduled Caste (SC) communities.
- 1992 policy focused to redefine entrance examinations.
- 2020 policy is focused to reduce curriculum content to enhance essential learning, critical thinking and more holistic experiential, discussion-based and analysis-based learning.
Each one of the above education policies have played significant role in the overall growth of our country. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family culture never allowed us to attack or rule any country. But India was ruled by ~200 years by British and ~236 years by Mughals which has affected our core values, culture and education. Hence after independence it must have been a difficult task for different governments to correct ~436 years of massive damage which has affected 6-7 generations.
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
Let’s understand National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in detail. Following are the key principles of NEP 2020
- Respect for Diversity & Local Context
- Equity & Inclusion
- Community Participation
- Use of Technology
- Emphasize Conceptual Understanding
- Unique Capabilities
- Critical thinking and Creativity
- Continuous Review
On a broader level NEP2020 has outlined all basic requirements to make Atmanirbhar Bharat to achieve following outcomes:
- Universalisation of Access – from Early Child Care Education to Secondary
- Ensure equity and inclusion
- Bring back 2 crores out-of-school children
- Attain Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) goals of retaining all children in schools until completion of secondary education
- Improve Quality and achievement of learning outcomes –Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN)
- Focus on 21stcentury skills in teaching, learning and assessment
- Resource sharing – School complexes
- Effective Governance – separation of powers and common norms
- Overcoming the language barrier in learning
- Common standards for public and private school education
Every policy clearly defines WHAT to be done to achieve the larger goal. But HOW to implement it at different levels is always been a difficult task. Its proven many times in last 2 decades any implementation with technology always bring desire adoption. Technology helps users at different levels to monitor, measure and analyse overall eco-system.
How to ensure desire outcome from NEP 2020?
We need to build scientific teaching & learning system which can be part of new academic structure (5+3+3+4): 3 years in Anganwadi/pre-school and 12 years in school.
- 5 years – foundational
- 3 years – preparatory
- 3 years – middle
- 4 years – secondary
NCERT & State Boards have done significant research & content development to explain different subjects like Languages, Science, Arts, Mathematics, Social Science etc. Tons of the content available for specific subject-chapter-topic physically and digitally. There are amazing organizations like Khan Academy who are providing free of charge content. As per my view, we don’t have issue with content availability. Our major issue is creating INTEREST among Teachers & Students for teaching & learning.
To achieve overall NEP 2020 outcomes, there are major dependency on physical & digital infrastructure, skilled teachers, and collaboration between central & state governments. I am sure central & state governments are doing their best to ensure smooth implementation of NEP 2020. But I suggest following most critical steps which’ll make NEP 2020 foundation strong to create teaching & learning interest among teachers and students.
- Empower parents & teachers for successful implementation of Early Child Care Education (ECCE)
- Help students to clear every subject-chapter-topic concepts
- Build system to understand teaching & learning strength and gaps
Student will spend 15 years to complete her/his education & after spending so much time, effort, and money they should be relevant to professional world.
Empower parents & teachers for Early Child Care Education
Mother is the first and the best teacher for any child. Along with mother if child has got access of good school teacher then foundational academic – 5 years becomes blessing.
90% of a child brain’s development happens before the age of 5. And by empowering parents & teachers we are helping students growth to the maximum potential.
We can implement following digital processes to empower every parent & teacher
- Let parent know what is being taught in the class today?
- Let parent & teacher know how much is being understood by every student?
- Identify the strength and understanding gap and suggest desire content (video & reading) to bridge the gap
- Repeat the process on periodic basis
- Let parent and teacher do child conversation with reference to data
Help students to clear every subject-chapter-topic concepts
Do we like any subject if our concepts are not clear? Answer is a big “NO”. Most of the students doesn’t like Mathematics, Science and English because their concepts are not clear. Till 7th or 8th standard most of them are ok to live with them. But the moment they reach 9th standard they surrendered to complex subjects. NEP 2020 is being designed to provide foundation to develop curiosity, logical thinking, problem solving and many other skills in formative years of every student. This is only possible if we can clear their every subject-chapter-topic concept from anganwadi/nursery to grade 7th/8th.
With reference to historical and current evidence, learning rarely moves in the straight line. Hence, we need to build technological support to all the students to clear their concepts.
Build system to understand teaching & learning strength and gaps
If 28% population of our country is under 14 years of age, then we need to do all our level best to implement scientific system to understand teaching & learning strength and gaps on daily basis. Teaching and learning are happening every day so monitoring, measurement and analysis should also happen on periodic basis.
Manually we can’t track the progress of all the teachers and students. If we provide them periodic feedback in structured format then it’ll surely help them to better their teaching and learning plans.
In conclusion, if we integrate implementation of NEP 2020 with technology then adoption will increase significantly to get the desire outcome.
