While raising my two boys, who are now 13 and 9 years old, I have read several books on parenting. However, interestingly, I never found a single perfect definition of parenting. This is mainly because every child is unique. Therefore, it often becomes difficult to apply the experiences of our parents, relatives, or friends directly to our own children. Consequently, parents must be cautious while implementing advice from others, especially from those who are not directly involved in the child’s growth and development.
Furthermore, there is nothing called completely good or bad parenting. Instead, parenting is more about how we nurture, guide, and support our children throughout their growth. Whether a mother is working or a homemaker has limited impact on the overall development of the child. What truly matters is the bond, love, trust, and emotional connection shared between parents and children.

For me, a child’s mental and physical health is the most important factor in their development. Therefore, I strongly believe that parents should focus more on human values, emotional intelligence, and life skills rather than only academic achievements. In fact, research has shown that children with strong mental well-being and physical health often perform better in their professional and personal lives.
In addition, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 also emphasizes holistic development, experiential learning, and skill-based education instead of focusing only on marks and examinations. NEP 2020 encourages parents and educators to support children in developing critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and strong character values. This approach aligns perfectly with the idea that education should nurture a child’s overall personality, interests, and strengths.
Moreover, in today’s digital era, parents can also adopt technology and scientific tools to understand their child’s learning patterns and growth more effectively. Instead of passing subjective comments on academic performance, parents should analyse why a child performs well in some subjects and struggles in others. Nagging or constant comparison does not help; rather, it discourages children and gradually makes them lose interest in learning.
Therefore, parents must play multiple roles — a guide, mentor, teacher, and often a best friend. It may not always be easy, but it is extremely rewarding. As the saying goes, “Children don’t listen to us; they observe us.” Hence, parents must create a positive and supportive learning environment where children feel safe, valued, and motivated. When this environment is created, children naturally grow, learn, and blossom like a healthy and colorful flower.
