The complete guide on NAAC Accreditation

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC), plays a crucial role in ensuring and enhancing the quality of higher education across India. NAAC accreditation serves as a national benchmark for evaluating the standards of teaching, learning, research, infrastructure, and governance in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). As stated in its vision, NAAC’s mandate is to make quality assurance an integral and continuous part of institutional functioning.

NAAC accreditation acts as a quality certification, building trust among students, parents, and stakeholders, and supporting student admissions, institutional credibility, and academic recognition. It also encourages institutions to adopt best practices, transparency, and continuous improvement mechanisms.

In alignment with NEP 2020, NAAC accreditation emphasizes holistic, multidisciplinary, and outcome-based education, along with technology-enabled learning, research orientation, and innovation. NEP 2020 envisions quality-driven institutions that focus on student-centric learning and continuous evaluation—objectives that closely align with NAAC’s accreditation framework.

For higher education institutions, securing accreditation from reputed bodies such as NAAC, NBA, or recognition through NIRF rankings significantly enhances institutional quality, national ranking, funding opportunities, and global competitiveness. Together, these frameworks support NEP 2020’s vision of transforming India into a globally recognized knowledge hub through excellence in higher education.

Benefits of NAAC Accreditation

NAAC accreditation is something even higher education institutes should be aware of. As obtaining NAAC accreditation for higher education institution has many benefits some of them are:

  • Using a continuous evaluation process NAAC accreditation helps the institution identify its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
  • Helps in understanding the need for proper allocation of resources.
  • Helps to understand the need for planning in the internal matters
  • Offers a better identity to the institute
  • Introduces the market with the quality of courses offered
  • Provides a positive impact to the institution.

Eligibility Criteria Of NAAC Accreditation

To appear for the NAAC, an institute should fit into the NAAC accreditation criteria;

The Universities and Colleges can successfully be accredited by NAAC, provided they comply with the following NAAC’s eligibility criteria:

  • All universities & colleges from Central, State, Private and Deemed-to-be are eligible.
  • The Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) campus should be in the Indian region.
  • The HIEs recognized by or affiliated to autonomous colleges & universities are considered for the Assessment and Accreditation (A&A) process

NAAC Accreditation Process

There are seven steps of the accreditation process-

Registration of the HEIs on the NAAC website

The NAAC accreditation process begins as soon as the HEIs completes its registration on the NAAC website.

The HEI needs to fill the registration form with a valid All India Survey on Higher Education(AISHE) reference code.

All the affiliated institutions should give a self-declaration statement mentioning their affiliation status. After the institution completes the registration form NAAC will verify it and then provide the Login Credentials to the institution, giving them access to the portal.

Compilation of the Institutional Information for initial Quality Assessment (IIQA)

The HEIs can login to the portal using the valid user credentials, fill in the IIQA form along with the documents required and pay the fees online.

Submission of the Self-study report (SSR) on acceptance of IIQA-

The next step is submission of the SSR only after the acceptance of IIQA (if it is rejected the institution gets two more attempts to resume the process within 1 year).

The 7 broad criteria while preparing a SSR are:

  1. Curricular aspects
  1. Teaching- Learning and Evaluation
  1. Research, Innovations and Extension
  1. Infrastructure and Learning Resources
  1. Student Support and Progression
  1. Governance, Leadership and Management
  1. Institutional Values and Best Practices
Process of Data Validation & Verification (DVV) and Pre-qualifier Score

After the submission of the SSR, all the data is validated using an online mechanism which generates a pre-qualifier score. The score weights 70% on the basis of online evaluation and 30% on the basis of peer judgment.

On the basis of the DVV result the NAAC team will decide the dates of the Peer Team Visit or whether the institution is to be disqualified from having a peer team visit.

Preparation for the Student Satisfaction Survey (SSS) after the DVV

In order to conduct the SSS, the HEIs should submit the complete student counts with their enrollment details, number and details of program, students count in each program, contact number, and email ids of each student. Here the NAAC initiates a survey with 30% of students from all programs. It sends an activation link, the students can log in to give the survey responses. The collected responses are surveyed and calculated in metric value.

Onsite Peer team visit by NAAC for the further verification of the institution

The NAAC peer team visits the institution to verify the information provided. This is a necessary step in the accreditation process. The visiting team assesses and evaluates all the information provided in the qualitative metrics.

Final grades are assigned to the institution by NAAC

After the onsite assessment the team prepares a qualitative report which is generated after identifying the strengths, weakness, opportunities and challenges (SWOC) and assigns scores on the qualitative metrics

The NAAC assigns final grades to the institution by combining all the following three scores

  1. Peer Team Report
  1. Statistical Analysis of Quantitative Metrics
  1. Institutional Grade Sheet
