Teachers’ Day: Celebrating Those Who Teach, Guide, and Inspire Us 

Every year, on 5 September, we celebrate Teachers’ Day in India to thank the teachers who have made a difference in our lives. Often, we may not realise their impact immediately, but their lessons, guidance, and encouragement stay with us for years. 

A teacher does much more than teach a subject. Sometimes, it is a simple lesson we remember. Sometimes, it is a few words of encouragement when we are struggling. And sometimes, it is a teacher who simply believes in us and says, “You can do this.” 

That is what makes a teacher’s role so special. Teaching is not just about completing a syllabus; it is about helping students learn, grow, and believe in themselves. 

Why Do We Celebrate Teachers’ Day in India? 

Teachers’ Day is celebrated in India on 5 September, the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a philosopher, educator, and former President of India. 

The tradition began in 1962. When his students wanted to celebrate his birthday, Dr. Radhakrishnan suggested that the day be observed as Teachers’ Day instead. 

Since then, 5 September has become a special occasion for students to express their gratitude towards their teachers. 

Dr. Radhakrishnan was not only a respected teacher and educator but also India’s first Vice-President and second President. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 for his contribution to the nation. 

More importantly, the day reminds us of something simple: education is not only about what we learn, but also about the people who help us learn. 

Why Teachers Matter in a Changing Education System? 

Teachers play many roles in a student’s life. They teach, but they also guide, encourage, listen, correct mistakes, and motivate students when things become difficult. They help students understand concepts, develop practical skills, build confidence, learn from mistakes, think critically, and discover their strengths.

The relationship between a teacher and student often goes beyond lessons and classrooms. A teacher’s encouragement at the right moment can give a student the confidence to dream bigger and keep going through challenges. 

A well-known example is Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who often spoke about the influence of his teachers and how their guidance shaped his interest in science and learning. He began as a student with dreams, became a scientist, and eventually served as the 11th President of India. Their encouragement helped him believe in his abilities and pursue his dreams. 

This is what makes the teacher-student relationship special: teachers share knowledge, but they also build confidence, inspire curiosity, and help students see possibilities they may not have seen in themselves.
