Engineers’ Day: Engineers turn ideas into reality. 

As an engineer, I often think about one simple question: 

How did people build such remarkable things thousands of years ago without the technology we have today? 

Today, we have powerful computers, advanced software, modern machines, 3D modelling, artificial intelligence, and countless tools that make designing and building easier. Yet, when we look back at the work of engineers and craftsmen from ancient civilisations, we find structures and systems that still leave us amazed. 

They did not have the technology we depend on today. But they had something equally important—observation, understanding, creativity, patience, and an incredible ability to turn ideas into reality. 


Why Do We Celebrate Engineers’ Day on 15 September? 

Imagine being an engineer in India more than 140 years ago, when there were no computers, no advanced software, no modern machines, and very limited technology. 

This was the India in which Sir M. Visvesvaraya began his engineering journey. 

Born in 1861 in Karnataka, Visvesvaraya studied civil engineering and started his career during the British era. At a time when opportunities and resources were very different from what engineers have today, he worked on challenging problems related to water, irrigation, floods, and infrastructure

What makes his story inspiring is that he did not allow limited technology to limit his thinking. 

He observed problems carefully, worked with precision, designed practical solutions, and kept looking for better ways to serve people. His work on water-management and irrigation projects became an important part of his legacy. 

But he did not stop at engineering projects. 

As the Dewan of Mysore, he worked to encourage industries, education, and technical development. His vision was bigger than building structures—he wanted to help build a stronger India by creating knowledge, skills, industries, and opportunities for future generations

That is why his story is so meaningful for engineers today. 

He was not simply an engineer who built things. He helped create an environment in which more people could learn, become skilled, and build for the future. 

In recognition of his contribution to the nation, he received the Bharat Ratna in 1955. His birth anniversary, 15 September, has been celebrated as Engineers’ Day in India since 1968

More than a date on the calendar, Engineers’ Day gives us a chance to remember the mindset he represented: 

Think deeply. Solve real problems. Work with precision. And build something that lasts. 


The Tools Changed, but the Engineering Principles Remained 

What is fascinating is that many challenges faced by ancient builders are still familiar to engineers today. The difference is in the tools, technology, and techniques we use to solve them

  • Civil Engineering: Ancient builders used simple tools, manual measurements, stones, ropes, levels, and clever structural techniques to build temples, roads, bridges, and water systems. Today, civil engineers use CAD, surveying equipment, structural analysis software, drones, GPS, and advanced construction machinery to design and build more complex structures. 
  • Mechanical Engineering: Ancient people developed the wheel, gears, pulleys, levers, and water-powered mechanisms to create movement and reduce human effort. Today, mechanical engineers use 3D modelling, computer simulations, CNC machines, robotics, and advanced materials to develop machines that work on the same basic principles of movement, force, and energy. 
  • Electrical Engineering: Ancient civilisations used fire, simple mechanisms, and natural phenomena in practical ways, but modern electrical engineering has transformed our understanding of electricity. Today, engineers design power systems, motors, circuits, sensors, batteries, and renewable-energy systems using advanced testing and simulation tools. 
  • Computer Engineering: Ancient people relied on manual calculations, counting systems, and mechanical methods to process information. Today, computer engineers use processors, programming, networks, cloud computing, and AI to process enormous amounts of information in seconds. 

The tools have changed, but the purpose remains the same: understand, solve, create, and improve

From ancient wheels and water systems to modern machines, software, and smart infrastructure, engineering has always been about turning human curiosity into practical solutions

Technology evolves, but the spirit of engineering remains. 


My Journey as an Engineer 

For me, being an engineer is not only about having a technical qualification or working with technology. 

It is about developing the habit of looking at a problem differently. 

Sometimes the solution is already known. Sometimes it requires experimentation. Sometimes the first attempt fails completely. 

But every problem teaches us something. 

My own journey has reinforced the idea that learning never really stops for an engineer. Technologies change, tools change, and new challenges appear. What remains important is the willingness to understand, learn, build, and improve. 

And this way of thinking is also reflected in the work we do every day at LearnQoch
